Weekend Locks for Dec 21-22
My "Can't-Miss" recommendations for tomorrow and Sunday.
Let the games begin! We saw a cool front come through on late Wednesday night into Thursday.
Today, there’s another one blowing through.
This one will send overnight lows into the upper 20s on Saturday night. Rising barometric pressure isn’t going to help this weekend.
This will affect the sac-a-lait and bass fishermen more than the saltwater guys.
Now, let’s get to the locks!
The Chalmette Wall
While the Trestles continues to produce fish this month, I just don’t see it lasting past this latest front.
The wall has been very dependable and will get even better with this last cold front.
While the numbers are improving, we continue to see larger specks being caught along the wall as well.
My latest report from the wall was from Wednesday: a 3-man limit all caught with live shrimp on drop-shot with the biggest fish measuring 22 inches and 11 fish over 18 inches.
I also got a report from 2 different boats that the MRGO rocks are producing.
This hard front will only help the bite along the rocks.
Remember, if you use live shrimp or anything Gulp, be prepared for a ton of blue cats (which may or may not be a problem for you)
Plastics will produce a cleaner box of specks. Matrix, Speck-Drum, and Blue Collar Bait work best on a jighead will all work.
Winds are forecasted to be under 10 MPH all weekend with sunny skies.
ICW Marsh
Last week my lock was Wastehouse Bayou but I can’t take a chance of sticking with that this week.
The tide is over 1.5 feet and dropping all morning.
Those overnight lows in the upper 20s are enough to freeze that water in the swamp.
When that shallow, cold water drops out of the swamp it runs EVERYTHING out of that bayou.
With that being said, I’m going to give the nod to the ICW marsh once again as my “freshwater” lock.
As winter sets in, it’s going to be hard to beat the ICW Marsh for bass!
With the winds turning over to the north, all those duck ponds are going to be draining.
Every bass that calls a duckpond home will be forced into the bayou that feeds into it.
It’s going to be like shooting fish in a barrel this weekend.
While the marker 54 Shrimp has been the hot lure recently, I prefer the Vudu because of its size.
Remember, the entire canal is an option when fishing for bass this weekend.
Don’t just beat the bank. Have a little patience and let that shrimp sink down.
Then, give it a twitch while slowly reeling in. Those bass are stocking up for winter and gorging themselves, so you’ll know when one jumps on!
With two closed seasons for flounder under our belts, are you catching more or less flounder than you did before the season was enacted? |
